How can a source of contamination be investigated when long-term groundwater remediation continues to release solvents and provides further indications of local hotspots? At the site of a former dry cleaner, a thermally assisted soil vapor extraction system was used for this purpose. The heating mobilizes the volatile halogenated hydrocarbons (VHCs), which are then captured via the soil air.

In the webinar, we’ll show how level-specific contaminant measurements and target discharge rates determined the control of the individual heating elements and extraction lines. The specifications estimated the contaminant mass at just over 100 kg; to date, more than 450 kg of LHKW have been discharged. For the same operating period, we also compare the specific costs per kilogram of LHKW removed with those of the accompanying pump-and-treat system. This comparison shows that contaminant removal via thermally assisted soil-air extraction is significantly more cost-effective.
